You can pull off a redshirt at any time. After the season, if he didn't play, he will have another year.
If he did play, he won't have another year, unless he played less than a certain percentage of the time and you can classify him as a medical redshirt.

Thanks man. I appreciate the info. So you don't actually redshirt someone until the season starts. So everyone is free to compete for the starting gig and soon as their on campus. And he could even play a game or two and still be able to redshirt as long as it fell under the percentage to still be "allowed" to redshirt? Am I understanding you correct?
