The interesting thing about Les Miles' reputation is how it has changed over the last decade. At Ok State and for the first few years at LSU he was not regarded as the "pound the rock" guy he is now considered to have always been

What Les did a decade ago in a different league isn't very relevant. What he's done at LSU is, and he's always been a "pound the rock" guy.

He has just not run the same type of offense at LSU from year to year.

Compare this

2007

or this

2006

with this

2010

or this

2011

2006/2007 are very different in their philosophies from 2010/2011

Much has to do with personnel, specifically who the QB is. 2005-2007 we had Jamarcus and Matt. If RP hadn't hosed up we would have seen a continuation of the same type O. It was attempted I think with Lee, but he turned out to be a pic machine. The staff realized JJ had no pocket presence but at a certain point he had to be put in. This year Miles demonstrated every game he wanted to pass more. For a variety of reasons it wasn't very successful but the idea of 'pound the rock' has more to do with QB development/performance than anything. As a sidenote, I'm not piling on Lee/JJ. The QB development under Miles has been generally poor of late and unless it improves I'm afraid we'll be on the sidelines watching the Saban train go by, along with everyone else. JMO.
