Bryant didn't leave talent? Hmmm. Well, that only helps the next coach transition. And I think Perkins did fine except for the ole Auburn game. Or so I've been told lots.
Bryant left a frickload of talent. Bama was still pretty good in the 80's, just not great.
Perkins did well against AU although two of his wins were gifts. 1984, Bo got the wrong play call in the huddle and Robert motherfricking 4 -eyes McGinty missed 3 second half field goals, two of them chip shots and two in the 4th quarter (one like a 28 yarder) that would have won the game. Then Perkins benefited from Van Tiffen in 1985 and his miracle 52 yarder after Shula hit a long pass with only a few seconds left to get in fg range. Perkins should have been 0-4 against AU, but he ended up 2-2. He was a decent coach, but nothing special.
