I've got a chance to get grandfathered into a contract for 70 a month with unlimited data. I plan on getting the iPhone 5 if I do it. I've heard that they slow down your data speed a lot if you have unlimited, and I've also heard people that have had no problem with their data speeds

Who has experience with it?

May as well just get a regular plan then.

I don't understand? 5 has LTE, what's the drawback? I have one now with limited data on AT&T and it's faster than my computer

Eta: the whole point of potentially taking this contract is having access to something that is no longer offered. If I wanted a regular plan I'd stick with my 3GB of AT&T

Are you sure you can get the 5 and unlimited?

I have it and don't see any drop off in speed. I've heard though that if I upgrade through Verizon they will make me go to tiered data. My RAZR works fine for what I need though for now.

If YOU upgrade, yes.
But say you have a spouse who has a regular plan, you can buy her a brand new phone on her plan, and then have your number switched to that phone. Then of course you'd have to give her your old phone or a new one.

Just heard that from a guy at Verizon before as a way to get around that.

So if we both have data packages, we have to get unlocked phones off of eBay or similar?

Eta: I see what you're saying. I have unlimited, she has 2 gb. I can get her a new ne and she takes mine or vice versa.

Unlocking phones is now technically illegal.

I was grandfathered in until my latest upgrade. Now I'm on a limit.

I'm unlimited, and have never been capped.

The thing that makes it worth while is foxfi, which allows me to use my RAZR as a hot spot. (is this even possible for an iphone?)

Even when tethering my tablet/laptop to stream movies from my house and Netflix, I've never used more than probably 4 gigs of data in a month.

So unless you're going to tether (which I HIGHLY recommend, it's the tittys), it prob won't matter which plan you have.

Verizon will bog you down once you reach a certain point, but we're talking once you get into the double digits of GB usage. I actually work tech for them and have had 1 call in 2 years about it.

As for unlimited data, there is only one way to keep it if you upgrade. If you have an alternate upgrade on your account (wife's phone is eligible), you could use her upgrade, activate the phone on her number, then reactivate her original phone freeing up the new one, and then activate the new one on your number. At this point the system is recognizing the phone as customer provided equipment and not an upgrade.

I have unlimited data on my GS3 that got grandfathered onto my account. I am on TD a good bit of every day, download a bunch of stuff for school, stream YouTube videos, etc. I can get anywhere from 20Mb/s to 45Mb/s on 4G lte. I have wifi tether and have had 4 different computers connected while still having 9Mb/s on my phone

If it had an hdmi out, I would stream Internet movies from it.

Im grandfathered in. Im using Motorola Razor. Never had any problem. Hell, i even tethered it to my desk top for a while. Plus 4G is pretty god. I would say go for it.
