That's not how it went down. Penn State was #1 after Nebraska beat Oklahoma. Paterno wanted to play the highest ranked team. Penn State was all set to go to Miami and play Nebraska until Missouri upset Nebraska the following week.So,with Alabama now #2 Penn State accepted a Sugar Bowl Bid.

Ah. Thanks for the correction. Either way...Alabama would have played Penn State, with or without the tie between Auburn and Georgia.
