Thank you. And just for that the non-Bama fans griping about Bear handpicking his schedule-- check out Bear's OOC games in 1978: Sure, there was Virginia Tech who was bad then, but check out these 4 others: Nebraska, Southern Cal at Washington (after their first trip to the Rose in eons) and at Missouri --who terrorized topt 10 teams in the '70's.

My point exactly. Unlike everybody else we did not play Vanderbilt a lot when they were down. We played them when they were good.

What the hell was stopping every other SEC school from doing the same thing Coach Bryant did back in those days? We hear shite all the time about him stocking his unlimited roster with studs just so other teams couldn't get those players. Nothing at all. Rival fans saying this is just butthurt that their head coaches weren't big shots and basically sucked. Kids would rather go to alabama and be a 7th string running back than go to AU and be 2nd string. Sucks to suck.

It's really nice having the greatest coach in college football history as your Athletic Director and most powerful person in college athletics making your schedule.
You need to take another look at our non-conference schedule from that era. In 1978 alone we played Nebraska, Missouri, Washington, and USC. In fact…it can most definitely be argued that the schedule Bryant put up in '77 and '78 cost us a consensus threepeat.

Listen, y'all have a history of producing a solid football program at AU, it's been that way for decades and will be that way for decades to come. You have a program and a history to be proud of, there's no point in constantly trying to justify your program to your SEC bretheren.

That may have been true in some cases, but not even close to all cases. During the Barfield era I'm sure you guys could've gotten whoever you wanted, but Dye beat Bryant for a lot of recruits in the 2 years they competed, and that was not the case during most of Jordan's years either.

I know. And that's why people need to stop bitching about the title from that year that we share with USC. Yeah…we lost to them, but we played a MUCH tougher non-conference schedule than USC did that year. Our first three opponents were all ranked in the Top 10 when we played them. The schedules Bryant put together in 1977 and 1978 cost us the first consensus threepeat in college football history.

Exactly like shite is today in the year 2013. We ALL have the same damn restrictions and scholarship limits and folks have bitched and whined for years about Saban's "oversigning"... So what happens? The damn SEC places even more restrictions and limits on scholarships. And guess what? Saban is preparing his team for their 3rd NC in FOUR years. I honestly think Saban sits back and laughs his arse off sometimes about it - because he knows that no one will out work him no matter how many rules are implimented to do so.

According to THIS SITE (Stassen LINK), here are the records of SEC teams vs. Vanderbilt prior to the creation of the Southeastern Conference in 1932: Auburn: 5-9-1 Bama: 4-8 Florida: (the database went kerblooey on this for some reason)
That's because Florida didn't exist until 1990, pal.

I also look at the "integrity" stat that shows no team in college football history has had more games forfeited or vacated than Alabama.

AU has pumped out some very successful scientists, engineers, and buisness people in the country over the years. Hell, even some Fortune 500 folks. Do they not "give back" to their alma matre? You know as well as I do that if AU needs/wants $$ to fund their athletic's all they have to do is ask. I know several AU folks right here in Monkey town with deep pockets. These same old farts were around during the Bryant years too.

Somehow that stat doesn't bother me in least today.

That was due to the NCAA instituting the scholarship max size of 95 in 1977 (which is 85 nowadays). Without this help, the Bryant type dominance of Alabama would have continued through the 80's
