Texas would have beat you if McCoy doesn't get hurt. Not a good example.

I know this is a six page thread, so somebody's probably brought up stats already, but McCoy played two good defenses that year (Oklahoma and Nebraska) and he was absolutely God awful against both. He had an 84qb rating against OU and an 81qb rating against Nebraska. And that's college qb rating, not NFL. For reference, the very worst QB in the NCAA this year was Kansas' Dayne Christ and he had a QB rating of 97. Kyle Frazier (2TDs, 8ints on the year) had a college QB rating of 99.

So in other words, against good defenses, Colt sucked harder than Linda Lovelace. We're talking 2-3 picks, <5yards/attempt, 40% completion, etc.

So yea. It was not a foregone conclusion that McCoy would have played much better against Alabama. In fact, all the evidence said he would have played just as badly.
