It used to be before the game only, and it was "We're gonna beat the hell out of you." At a certain point after big victories, the band began playing it after games also. I remember the first few times saying "We just beat the hell out of you" seemed really weird. Of course I like it now. It eventually became to where we only played it after the game.

At what point did it transition?

I also remember at various points while I was at Alabama, the student government condemning the song, and some other entity (NCAA? SEC?) telling us the band couldn't play it anymore. Bama responded by simply playing it over the loudspeaker.

Also, at one point certain "rules" were created in house - it could only be played for certain games or for certain margins of victories. Of course this also fell by the wayside. Fans just love it too much.


So can anyone clear all this up for me? My memory on it is fuzzy. Can we get a definitive timeline of how it all went down?

I was a student when the change happened. I think it was 2003.
