In the 1930's the homecoming queen would ride the elephant.

During the early part of the Ironbowl after the game was resumed in the 40's and 50's, Birmingham would have a parade and a live elephant and live tiger would be featured in the parade.

In 1991 they brought back the live elephant for homecoming. As someone stated they brought a couple back in the early 2000's but that was the last time.
