The only thing Alabama was good for back in the day was working in steel mills I believe.

From the iron industry around Birmingham is what I always thought.

Because as Keith Jackson once said, "It's called the Iron Bowl, because there is so much scrap iron left over after the game." I always took that as a reference to bama and AU fans not being able to get along.

Bear Bryant had a toilet made of Iron that he won after wrestling a bear when he was a kid.

The name Iron Bowl stuck because the game was once played primarily in Birmingham, a center of iron/steel production.
