Way bigger for multiple reasons

1. The App state game was at the very beginning of the season and we all know how pre-season polls work. If we were to lose a game like that in November while ranked #5 we would be the biggest fraud since the 2004 OU team that lost 55-17 in the championship game.

2. That Appalachian State team was at the very end of a 3peat for the Subdivision championship (05-07)

3. That Appalachian State team had 7 guys get drafted. 3 went before the 3rd round; Armani Edwards, Brian Quick, and Dexter Jackson

Bottomline: A loss to Southern would be much worse and also grounds for a mass suicide

Michigan lost four games that year (App, Oregon, @Wisc, OSU). This would definitely be worse.
