I can believe UK officials might have talked to Smart's agent type person to guage interest, but to think that they went to the Alabama football offices and met with him. No way. Smart would not do that.
I would think most of these conversations are with agents/lawyers, not people like Smart himself. That is how these things happen quickly after a season is over. Everything is worked out in advance, then you have a meeting face to face after the season is over and a contract is signed.
I'm sure Nick Saban wants him focused on A&M, not a future job.

I should probably ask a gump, but is Smart considered Sabans successor as Bama HC?
He is so young and has had the job for a while. Saban obviously didn't give the job to someone so young, when there are many more qualified, experienced and successful defensive coaches around when Saban took the job, unless he saw something in him.
