But the Rex Ryan thing was reported on Insider FWIW,

Even worse, they are just at the mid point of their season, not to mention Rex Ryan would be an awful fit. The jets are the most dysfunctional team in pro sports.

You all can call it dumb all you want but they met with Smart yesterday. Just like they've contacted other coaches today.

If you don't think staffs talk to coaches before the season is over I don't know what to tell you. How else would hires happen so quickly in the post-season and sometimes even before bowl games?

The funny thing is I didn't even hear it from a Kentucky person. It came from someone with Alabama ties.

Yeah Ryan is an obnoxious douche bag. I'm not trying to pitch Rex Ryan as the next UK coach, I'm just relaying what the article said.

I just couldn't figure out why ESPN would consider Petrino out of bounds on moral grounds, but Rex Ryan Mitch's first choice? Makes no sense.

Belle,

I can believe UK officials might have talked to Smart's agent type person to guage interest, but to think that they went to the Alabama football offices and met with him. No way. Smart would not do that.

I would think most of these conversations are with agents/lawyers, not people like Smart himself. That is how these things happen quickly after a season is over. Everything is worked out in advance, then you have a meeting face to face after the season is over and a contract is signed.

I'm sure Nick Saban wants him focused on A&M, not a future job.

I should probably ask a gump, but is Smart considered Sabans successor as Bama HC?

He is so young and has had the job for a while. Saban obviously didn't give the job to someone so young, when there are many more qualified, experienced and successful defensive coaches around when Saban took the job, unless he saw something in him.

I really can't imagine Smart being considered Saban's successor at this point just because of his age and Saban's age. My guess would be Saban will be there at least 5 more years, and I doubt Smart would hang out there for that long just waiting.

He's been with Saban since 2004 when he was 28. Obviously Saban likes him. He's been the DC since Saban went to Alabama.

I'm guessing he is very well paid, and it would take the right job for him to put his situation at risk at his age. UK is not a place to take that risk for him, in my opinion.

I'm liking Tim DeRuyter the more I read about him. He's first on my list. The guy looks like he can really coach.

Yeah working under Saban most of your career and then moving to HC at a rebuild job like UK is a big step. I understand he has had success recently, but I think that it is easier to be successful at that job than HC at UK.

I agree. I'm not sure a "up and coming" young coach wants to step in here right now. Could be a career ending decision.

That is why in the back of my mind I think Mitch will go with someone older who's either not looking for the next job, or just simply close to retirement who will focus on making UK better.
Fulmer seems more and more like a viable option, especially if he brings Chavis with him, and keeps Sanders for continuity for our young offense.
