In an effort to answer your question about who if a defensive hire, I still go with my list from my post above, but I went through the list of NFL coordinators and on defense I wonder if there would be any interest from Mike Nolan. He has NFL head coaching experience and Atlanta's defense is solid. He does has some college coaching experience, but not as a head man.
I'm a bit leary of hiring a guy who has never coached at the college level, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

I'm sure it has, but its primarily due to age/personal life issues. He's been through a lot in the last year.

Pinkel has always been loyal to a fault with his staff (like keeping Yost as OC). Rumor is that he's championing the cause of his coordinators to replace him, but I don't think that's the direction we would go.
