What can Dan Mullen accomplish at State?... is 2012 the max (10-3 type team)? Can Mullen take MSU to the next step and win the SEC West?

He's got a very good eye for talent, IMO... both for players and assistants... and his teams seem to play physical on both sides of the ball. But, with the limitations of a program like state, is he content with not competing for/ and winning/ championships?

A program like Tennessee, Arkansas, and Auburn could do a lot worse (and probably will) than Dan Mullen, IMO.

It would take a lot of luck. State isn't going to be at Alabama and LSU's level for a long time. So yes, I think this year is about the best you're going to get. Which isn't bad. 10 wins in Starkville is something to be proud of.

Agreed.

Has the Memphis problems been finalized? He may be handicapped by a few scholies going forward.

I think the ceiling is a consistent bowl team. The talent gap and resource gap is just too large with the rest of the West to be able to run through it for State. I do think he is a quality coach though and hope State can hold on to him.

He has elevated State to a top 25 level program, and State can have some special seasons under him here and there- but State will never compete with Bammer or LSU when they are top 3 programs every damn season

But hell, nobody else is competing with Bammer right now either- they are about to win their 3rd title in 4 years

I think they could win the SEC if some things fell in the right place. They really need a special, once in a generation, offensive player in order to compete. They need a Cam Newton/Darren McFadden/Tim Tebow to be able to make up for the talent gap there is at other positions compared to Bama/LSU.

If the SEC was at the level it was in the 90's, I think he would win the SEC title. However, we now have a borderline NFL team in the western division, and no one is going to win it until Saban retires or goes full retard which isn't gonna happen.

Not as long as Saban is at Bama.

Similar to Spurrier at SC only will less potential for talent. Even though Spurrier has brought SC a long way towards relevance, they still have not won a SECC. Mullen's path in the West is even more difficult but I will give him credit, he has definitely done more with less.

I think Mullen reached his MSU ceiling Saturday night at 7:44:59. 12-1 or 11-2 will be the best he'll ever do there and his 12-1 won't get a championship sniff the way things are going in BR and Tuscaloosa.

I could see him doing better at UT or Auburn if he coached either long enough. Arky would have to "perfect storm" for him to do any better than he can do at MSU.

I think the typical expectation under Mullen is consistent bowl team... with 6-7 wins on a down year and 9-10 wins on an up year and consistently being ranked or on the verge of top 25 ranking.

If Mullen sticks around, with our improved recruiting and stadium expansion and other facilities being upgraded, we will see that ceiling begin to rise to where we can compete on a higher level once in awhile.
