Paige had a 1.66 GPA at this HS and he will probably never have academic problems while at bama.

For everyone who's latched on to this comment, the article states that Pruitt believed Paige to have a 1.66 GPA in core classes. His overall GPA is most likely higher.

The low GPA is precisely why Pruitt wanted him to transfer to Foley. Since he can take more classes per semester at Foley than Washington he will have the opportunity to re-take core classes that he scored poorly on as a soph and junior. Retaking classes and doing better in them is the quickest way to drastically improve his GPA and gives him the best chance of meeting the NCAA's academic requirements.

Also, it's easy but lazy to assume that an athlete who has trouble qualifying out of high school but gets by academically in college is the result of something shady or untoward. Granted, there are instances where this happens like at UNC with AA studies or Auburn with Sociology. But just because a kid barely qualifies out of high school does not necessarily mean that he is stupid. Often times these kids don't realize they have a shot at playing college football (and therefore have a shot at going to college) until they are a junior or senior in high school. Many of these kids simply didn't try very hard in the classroom as frosh or sophs. Once they become D1 prospects, they spend their last 2 years trying to bring their GPAs up because they were slacking their first 2 years. They had the ability all along; they just needed motivation. Once they get to college, they have the motivation and are aided by lots and lots of academic support.
