When I was in 6th grade, my father took a year to work for the NSF in DC. Knowing we would only be there a year, we took full advantage of DC in terms of sightseeing and doing things you can only do in DC.
One weekday, my mother packed up me and my two brothers, hopped the bus at the corner to the Metro at the Pentagon and into downtown DC. We proceeded to the office buildings for Congress and had a cordial handshake meeting with the ever-accommodating statesman John Danforth. We boarded the Senate subway to head over to the Capitol. They were very small cars and I sat down across from an affable elderly man who engaged us in polite conversation. He poked me in my stomach with his cane and said,"How are you, son?" I replied I was fine and smiled sheepishly. That man was Barry Goldwater.
