The main issue with our defense is depth (as evidenced by the LaTech game). Snyder (our DC) has done an excellent job, I think, in putting our players in schemes that allow them to be successful with adequate execution. The talent gap will bite us in the arse for a couple seasons, but overall I think we're headed in the right direction more quickly than most anticipated.

I've been saying all along that once your coach figures out he needs to start putting his best players he recruits on defense instead of offense, A&M will be a contender for the SEC.

Yeah, I think Sumlin realizes this, but in order to be even moderately successful right out the gate, he had to make do with the players Sherman had recruited to survive a big12 slate. Even though A&M fell flat in 2011, the talent was there to make waves in that league. Moving to the SEC with big12-caliber players, the only way to keep things competitive is to supercharge your offense and hope the D hang on for the ride until they catch up talent-wise. I think he's done a pretty good job overall with that, and the defense has really stepped up in a big way compared to last year, in my opinion. SEC-caliber defense? Not there yet.
