I think buying refs is as absurd a theory as anything, but this video makes me wonder wtf is actually happening.
Any logical reason the ref would look back at the first down marker? The foot moving is meh, the look back before placement is not.

In the way this was done, no way. He did it while spotting the ball and continued to move the ball up to make sure it was a first, even though his foot spot, where it is seen on the field typically, was well behind.
And then the twisting of the foot like "nope, no one will notice" and STILL putting the ball far ahead of his toes even though the foot is sideways
