How many National Championships does Alabama really have?
As many as they want to count.

Check out my sig...

quote:

Bama Nat. Champs: 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934 (Rose Bowl Nat. Champs); 1941; 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011 (Poll Nat. Champs - 9 AP & UPI; 3 Crystal Balls-1 Bowl Coalition & 2 BCS)

1925, 1926, 1930, and 1934 were historic Rose Bowl wins and were named NC's. Legit.

The 1961, 64, 65, 73, 78, 79 were AP and/or Coaches poll champions. All legit.

The 1992 was Bowl Coalition Champs; and 2009 & 2011 BCS Champs. Legit

The only one I don't like to count is the 1941. Even though someone, Houlgate System, named Bama NC.

I would have rather claimed 1945 (Bama doesn't claim this one) since the National Championship Foundation named Bama NC. At least shared it with Army.

Here are five teams that were recognized but Alabama does not count as national champions.

Year Coach Record Bowl Selectors Champion
1945 Frank Thomas 10-0-0 Rose (W - USC, 34-14 ) NCF Army
1962 Paul W. Bryant 10-1-0 Orange (W - Oklahoma, 17-0) BR USC
1966 Paul W. Bryant 11-0-0 Sugar (W - Nebraska, 34-7) CBR, NCF, SR Notre Dame, Michigan State
1975 Paul W. Bryant 11-1-0 Sugar (W - Penn St., 13-6) MG Ohio State
1977 Paul W. Bryant 11-1-0 Sugar (W - Ohio St., 35-6) FR Notre Dame
