To see the post being replied to, click the name of the poster on the far top right.
I know most you older posters know this feature but I would've never known unless someone pointed it out to me a long time ago.

They need to make sure they are replying to the right person. 
And if the thread is moving fast, use the quote function so everyone will know what you're responding to.

I really dislike forums that don't have the very easy button "quote" that automatically does the (quote)(/quote) for you and everything. this forum and texags both don't have that while any other forum I've ever been on does, seems like it would be simple?

I go two dumb questions. 1) can I just make a post without replying to someone? 2) when I click quote an empty box comes up, do I have to manually type what I want to quote? Pardon my ignorance

Really late to the conversation, but another helpful hint is to be sure to lurk for a while before just commenting. See the layout of the board before you just start posting BS.
