I don't think it's a stretch to say that last year's team was among the elite: 11 wins, finished #5 in the country, with our only 2 losses coming to the 2 teams who played in the BCSNCG.
If we weren't among the elite, then you're limiting the definition of elite to no more than 4 teams in the country, maybe fewer.

That is in fact the definition of elite. VERY few members.
