I find the number of wins these guys are able to amass over more talented teams, along with the domination they consistently display over quality opposition in their own conference, along with taking care of business against the trash in their conference a pretty solid coaching job. Patterson in particular, has displayed over and over again that his defense will rise up to the challenge against top notch opposition and win the game for him (...the fighting RGIII's not included )

Most people agree that Patterson meets the criteria at this point in his career as a "proven head coach". Not everyone agrees on Peterson, but I think he's solid as a rock. His teams seem to drop a game they shouldn't every year though.

People said the same thing about Rich Rodriguez, Brian Kelly, and Dan Hawkins. They were considered as safe as you can get, especially Rich Rod.

The Big 10 has been weak for a while now. Their bowl record is abysmal. Wisconsin was not that much more talented than TCU. TCU was only ranked three spots lower than Wisconsin in recruiting in 2009, and was ranked higher in 2010. Wisconsin won't stay on top for much longer the way Michigan and Ohio State are recruiting. I was going to say Penn State too, but they lost everything.

The 3-3-5 defense had me EXTREMELY wary of how he'd fare at Michigan.

Brian Kelly

Is he a failure? He took over a pretty rank situation.

Dan Hawkins

Yeah, he sucked. Nepotism will screw you over I guess.

They're getting better. They were pretty weak in 2010, I'll give you that, but Wisconsin was a better team on paper than TCU. They had been bowling teams over that year.
