Even after Nebraska lost, it wasn't a national title game (yet). We needed #2 Arizona St to lose in the Rose Bowl as well.

I was wondering this also. With #1 FSU and #2 ASU being undefeated, why did they not play each other in the title game? I know we did not have the BCS then, but we still had a bowl coalition starting in 1992 that tried to match the top two teams. Was it a Rose Bowl issue I am assuming?

Yes. The Big 10 and Pac 10 wanted nothing to do with the alliance/coalition. Same reason Nebraska didn't play Penn St in 94 and Michigan in 97.

In 96 the Rose bowl was still not a part of the process. So, by contact, #2ASU/#4OSU in Rose, #3UF/at large. Sugar made the obvious and best choice of #1FSU. For fan reaction the best thing is to google old newspaper articles or find a Seminole site with some older posters who are fairly reasonable to give you their view. If I had interest I'd do it...but, honestly, no interest.
