I just wish we would have hired somebody with HC experience

Boise State hired Chris Petersen with no HC experience as did Penn State when they promoted Joe in 1966. Give the kid a chance

I'm giving Rick Ray a chance and my full support. It's not his fault he wasn't on my initial list of 25 coaches I wanted in Starkville.

College football is way different than college basketball in hiring coaches. As someone said, the last basketball assistant hired to be HC in the SEC was Rick Stansbury. It's almost unusual in college basketball for a BCS program to hire an assistant, especially one that is not already an assistant at the hiring school and/or has never been a basketball head coach.

Contrast that to a high percentage of BCS college football programs hiring college assistants or NFL coaches to be their head coaches--Georgia, Florida, Bama, Arkansas, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Florida State, West Virginia, Penn State, Boise State, Utah, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and others.

Having said, that, I'm excited to see what Rick Ray can do for State. He has received tons of accolades from coaches, reporters, etc.
