What was the place called long before it became Rama Jammer? Back before there was an ATM on every corner and half the customers were there just to cash a check.

Per Wikipedia
"In 2010, 29% of male undergraduates were in university-sanctioned fraternities, including 32% of male freshman. 38% of women undergraduates, including 43% of female freshman were in university-sanctioned sororities"

Good thing Fluker does not speak. That fool only speaks in ebonics. Seriously, he needs subtitles when asked a question on television. He must speak some form of Jamaican gullah or something.

My legal studies teacher asked who everyone was voting for and you could definitely tell who was the machine backed candidate in this race

When I was there, the machine used to rent vans and stock it full of beer and run shuttles from the old row houses to the polling place. The president was a good friend of mine and I'd ride all day with him shuttling the sheep back and forth.

I remember the SGA president in like 2004, Mary-Something-Something, at Undertakers, tripping her face off and rolling around in the grass like a dog. This shite ain't serious. GDI's get some sort od worked up about it every year though. Homecumming Queen is serious biz, y'all.

This. I was a member of an old row fraternity in the 90s and literally 90% of my fraternity didn't give a s### who won the SGA elections. Most of us found the idea of picking a candidate and block voting for them a stupid pointless power trip and nothing more. Most members did vote but more to support people they knew which happened to be the "Machine candidate". However, I must admit that the 10% who did care were pretty obnoxious about it and I can certainly see why non-fraternity/sorrority members have this idea that fraternity/sorrority members are so gung ho over the SGA elections. From someone in an old row fraternity it wasn't nearly as big a deal to the vast majority of members than outsiders think. Even the majority of old row fraternity/sorrority members thought the gung ho machine members were annoying, at least I know I did personally.

Bingo.

Eta: the thing that makes me laugh the most is the argument that the Greeks have politics "figured out." It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that if you have a voting block of 20-25% of the population, you'll win nearly any election. They argue that "If the GDIs backed someone, they'd win every time." Well, sure....but they aren't going to form a voting block because many of them have different agendas, hence they're independent.

Agreed. He was the type to try and impress the professor with funny jokes that weren't funny.

Good points. I have found that 2 kinds of people on Alabama's campus care about the Machine

1) The 2% of Greeks that are overly superficial, like power, or have political aspirations

2) Independents who think that it is unfair.

Everyone else doesn't care. As a Greek in a Machine fraternity I can tell you that it was interesting to hear about when I first started in school, but now I don't care at all. And if independents really cared they would fight against it and win the elections.

The most important thing though: The Machine and the SGA DO NOT MATTER. Neither of them do really anything, and overall campus life is not affected at all by either group.

^This. I was a memeber of an old row fraternity in the early 90's, most of us didn't give a shite either.
