You know what? You are right. I thought they at least had a share of it (AP or UPI) in '64. Now I see Bama had both. Yeah that's a pretty bogus claim. We can argue about NC claims all day, but I can't really think of any other schools (besides Bama's bogus '41 claim) who claim an NC in the poll era (post 1936) who didn't when one of the two major polls (AP or UPI).

Ohio St claims 1961. I think a couple other schools claim non-poll titles, too.

Actually, you'd be surprised... somebody's already mentioned the Ohio State one. Tennessee claims several past 1936 that aren't AP or UPI... Georgia claims one... SMU claims a few...
ETA: Kentucky (1) and Ole Miss (3).

We changed the landscape of college football for the better that season. The following season AP changed their poll to after the bowl game. We beat the team that beat you in your final game. It's still a recognized title by repuatble sources so we claim it. No different than 5-6 titles that Bama claims in their history. We were called national champs by a source in '77 and don't claim that one so it's not like we just take what we can get. We were the only team from a major conference undefeated. The only ones who polls who voted after the bowl games unanimously voted Arkansas as the national champs. Only Bama logic and a flawed system lets you keep your title so congrats.

Except we were undefeated and you lost to a team we beat.
