You absolutely can fire Richt at 10-4. I don't understand that reasoning.
Look, the AD has to set the ultimate goal of the program. For the sake of argument, let's say that goal is to win the BCS. The next step is to ask the question: is the staff currently in place going to achieve that goal? If the answer is yes, then keep the staff. If the answer is no, then replace the staff.
Such action may not be popular, but it would be correct. If the guy in charge is not going to achieve the goal, then there is no point in retaining him. Dubose should have been fired even after winning the SEC in '99, and Shula should never have made it four seasons.
Getting rid of Solich was the right choice for Nebraska, even if hiring Callahan was not. The correctness of the decision to fire a staff cannot be confused with the correctness of the hiring of its replacement.
