If you have a car but don't want to attempt parking downtown or don't want to shell out the cash for a cab ride downtown, here's a suggestion.
Drive to Carrollton Ave and River Road. Park on the levee (free). Go to Cooter Brown's and get a few drinks to go, then walk the half block to St. Charles and Carrollton. Catch the streetcar there and ride it downtown. Fare is $1.25. Tell the conductor you want to get off at Canal St.
When you exit the streetcar at Canal and Carondalet, you'll be right across the street from the French Quarter (Carondalet changes to Bourbon St across Canal).
If you're not going to the quarter, exit the streetcar just past Lee Circle (actually Howard and Carondalet) or at Poydras St. and walk to the dome from there. It's not a bad walk and you'll probably be in huge crowds walking to the dome anyway.
After the game I doubt you'll want to go to the quarter--you probably won't be in the mood for partying after such a devastating loss (c'est la vie).
You can catch the streetcar same place you got off (another $1.25). Tell the conductor you want to get off at St. Charles and Carrollton.
When you get back to Cooter Brown's, get a muffaletta (hope you like olives). There should be little traffic on the drive back to the hotel.
Drawback is not being near your car and the 30 min (or so) streetcar ride (though you'll probably enjoy it).

I don't know if they will extend it or not, but the streetcar service does stop after a certain hour (10pm i believe).

Damn thanks for the info. I have a room for 2 nights in Covington, now I know where I can park and catch a ride from instead of having to worry about parking or leaving my car in some bad area.
