He is not being an idiot here. N.O. is the murder capitol of the U.S. Be very careful. They don't care what color you wear. Even in the french quarter. Travel in groups at night and stay on well traveled streets.

Garden District is very safe. It is also has some pretty great places to go around there.
As with any New Orleans trip, you need a list of restaurants to hit. Don't wing-in there, have a plan you'll eat like a king.
