You have to win your conference to play for the National Championship:

They have their own rules so that wouldn't apply to them anyway.

Lol they have a BCS exception and priority outside of the Conf tie ins.
Changing that rule should it occur would not impact ND at all
But thanks for playing.

They already have specific rules for independents because of precious ND. Lou Holtz helped slobber that part of the BCS contract out.

This is correct. I had actually forgotten about this since only Lou Holtz belives they are relevant. I am one who has said for years a conference champion only should be eligible, but oh well.
Although, you could still make that rule and then that would seemingly force ND to make a decision.

Truthfully, I'm shocked that nobody ever mentions this. What if...
LSU beat Bama on Nov. 5th, but Trent Richardson was sidelined with a bad ankle. Trent only missed two weeks, but one of them was the LSU week.
Or, Andrew Luck missed the Oregon game. How could you blame Stanford for that?
Just my opinion, but those teams would have very legitimate arguments in those cases.

dumb thread, again from a bama fan. At least it doesn't say something to the effect of LSU fans being scared so it's a change from the normal stupidity.

Some truth to that, but even the conference champion isn't always the best team in the conference. I think that's why it's there.
If UCLA somehow beats Oregon, there's nobody that would believe they're the best PAC-12 team.
For me, winning your conference is part of the argument to be included in the NCG, but in no means the only argument.
