Petrino is working on it but it just takes longer. The question you really should be asking is why, in all of college football, are there only two "elite" defenses (Bama and LSU). I believe there are three reasons for this.

1. There are fewer dominant DL coming out of high school and dominant defensive linemen are the basis for great defenses. Both Bama and LSU have dominant DL.
2. The 2nd hardest position to fill in college are elite defensive backs. There just aren't that many of them coming out of high school ready to play because most great DBs typically play on offense 1st and defense 2nd. Arkansas’ best DBs ever was Steve Atwater and to illustrate my above point he was an option QB in high school.
3. Great linebackers are also hard to come by but a defense can be very good with average LB’s if a team has a great DL and great secondary. If a team has all three, like Alabama does, then you have an elite defense.

Outside of Bama and LSU, Arkansas’ defense compares favorably with the other top teams across the country and Petrino continues to upgrade the defensive talent level with every class.
