The Crimson Tide saw 18 of its newcomers – nine redshirt freshmen, seven true freshmen and two junior college transfers – make an appearance in its 2011 season opener against Kent State. Among the nine redshirt freshmen were TE Harrison Jones, LB Adrian Hubbard, DL Brandon Ivory, OL Chad Lindsay, OL Austin Shepherd, QB Phillip Sims, RB Blake Sims, TE Brian Vogler and WR DeAndrew White. Alabama’s seven true freshmen included S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, LB Trey DePriest, LB Xzavier Dickson, WR Christion Jones, OL Cyrus Kouandjio, DL Jeoffrey Pagan and DB Vinnie Sunseri. DL Quinton Dial and DL Jesse Williams, who are both junior college transfers, also made an appearance in the season opener.

Nope. Our starting 5 played the whole game, which seems silly to me

I don't understand why we're burning Keante Minor's redshirt right off the bat. There are 8 WR's ahead of him right now. My only guess is that we don't plan on having Johnson at kick return at all this season, so we need him back on kickoff returns with Wade

You can still redshirt even with playing time in non-conference games.

Petrino said today that Keante is playing because he has the best hands on the team just needs to learn technigue better but is big and physical and love to play special teams so they put him on a few ST's
