So did AU students really roll the trees when bear died?

I can't find any links proving or disproving this.

No.

Honestly the trees were never rolled until the late 80s, most people thin they were first rolled after the 1989 Iron Bowl. Until then the only thing that was actually TP'd was the light poles and things like that.

As for Bear's death, there was not any type of celebration in Auburn (at least nothing public). If there had been, you can bet their would have been a huge outcry at the time from the local citizens because the older folks living in Auburn at the time were of the genteel southern class. From what I have heard they had no problem taking the students to task in the newspaper op-eds when they felt the students had stepped over any line of good southern behavior, and celebrating anyone's death would not have just crossed but blown way past such a line.
