If the school is cooperating with them it takes less time and while painful is over much quicker.
When the institution blocks the NCAAs efforts at every turn, lawyers up and refuses to cooperate it can drag out for years.
If the institution and coaches are all involved with the corruption the only way to go is fight tooth and nail til the end. No one goes willingly to the gallows.

I saw Hang 'em High and it looked like most people willing walk up there and put the noose around their neck...just sayin'.
