Maybe you should go back and look at the rankings from that year. UK was in the top 10 the week they beat LSU. It was their best season since the Bear walked the sidelines. As for Arkansas, they were inconsistent much of the year but had three of the best backs in the SEC in Hillis, McFadden and Jones. They had the same personnel that had won the SEC West the previous year and they played an inspired game against LSU and pulled out a win in OT. And, while they were not in the Top 25, they were listed in the "receiving votes" section of the poll just outside of the top 25 for most of the year so they were much better than mediocre.

But dominated the BCSCG and were clearly the consensus pick as the best team in America and picked to be top ten the next season prior to RP getting the boot. Not even close to the same. Auburn just has that one and done feeling which is what the OP was getting at I think.
