Have You Ever Seen A Less Respected Champion Than Auburn?

The nation has moved on and no one cares. Everyone knows that Cam got paid. He played for Auburn one year and left for the NFL. Fairley left just as quickly. Now, we're hearing Auburn has been paying other players.

Auburn fans don't even seem as excited as other fanbases have been. A championship is good, but when you have no shot at even being good next year, it seems kind of hollow.

I think that the national perception is that Auburn cheated to get the championship but were smart enough to not get caught - yet. The hammer will fall OR they won't be able to cheat like this again. Either way, they are not a consistent player on the national scene. That seems tonbe how Auburn is perceived, 4 days after winning the title.

Am I wrong here?

Have they hoisted the 2010 National Cheaters flag yet?

No. In fact, after the 2007 LSU championship, I thought to myself that there would be no way that any school who won a championship would receive less respect than LSU did that year.

I was wrong.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't like it, though.

Cheaters gonna cheat.
Hatred gonna hate.

That's how the world works.

The 2-loss LSU team who lost to a bad Kentucky team AND a mediocre Arkansas...

LSU's 2007 team was not that respected due to the 2 losses. But I don't care because we are the only ones flying a 2007 National Championship Flag. I'm sure Auburn fans feel the same--as long as the NCAA doesn't rule that Cam was ineligible and the BCS doesn't take it away, who cares if other fanbases don't respect it. I know I wouldn't.

'07 LSU was a fricking joke. At least this team won it all on the field and didn't have to rely on a ridiculous amount of teams to lose, just to back into the game. And to think Less just got another 7 years out of that lucky horseshoe.

I had recorded the the trophy presentation and finally watched it yesterday. The word 'cheats' kept ringing in my mind. You could almost feel the undercurrents of illegitimacy associated with that team. It was sad.

I think this year's champion is receiving so little hype for 3 reasons:

1. Auburn is not a national brand name.
2. A large percentage of the nation feels the title is tainted by pay for play allegations. It asks too much of the common fan to honestly believe that Cam Newton was so close to his father, publicly admitted to letting his father choose his school for him, and yet have no idea that his father was shopping him for money.
3. I can't remember a title team who has ever been expected to be so bad the following year. People view this AU team more as a one trick pony as opposed to how LSU, Alabama, Florida, Texas, USC and Ohio St were expected to be dynasties that would maintain a status as perennial top 10 teams.

Not that I can think of. . .

07 LSU would be close, but not quite.

99 FSU is close, too. . .

Actually, NO ONE knows if Cam got paid. Haters are sure of it, people that don't care suspect it, and we Auburn fans don't believe it but secretly fear it.

May seem hollow to you but believe me it is not to AU fans...and the fact that Malzhan is coming back +a buttload of talent suggests that AU has a very good chance of being good next year...but yes, even the biggest homers wouldn't pick AU to repeat at champs of anything.

I think it's fair to say that at this point...most fans of other teams and national media feel like we got away with something and that there will probably be more to this story POSSIBLY including enough evidence to be very problematic for AU. But your suggestion that 1. AU won't be back because they can't cheat again...um....2004 was 6 years ago. 2. That AU is not a consistent player on the national scene...um...2004 was 6 years ago.

This time next year nobody will even remember that Auburn won it.

Except barners of course.

Least celebrated champions of all time.
