Look at the BCS Champs going back the last 10 years or so and get back with me.

they do matter to a point. you need blue chip(4-5*) starters at the very least to compete in the SEC. you can't just field a team full of 2/3*s and expect to compete in the SEC.

we saw on here long ago, some statistical analysis of rivals ratings and the actuals on the field.
There is a very high correlation between rivals and results. most years the #1 or #2 in rivals points is #1
now and then one that is not top two in rivals points sneaks in and wins the SEC W, but not often.
