playing non-officially ineligible players

Since all the pertinent facts were known before the UGA game, and nothing new came out that really changed whether Cam Newton was eligible/ineligible before UGA or after Bama, then why should any school sit a player whom the NCAA hasn't officially ruled on? Seems to me the REAL precedent set in this case is that the NCAA can no longer add punishment or make a team vacate wins without having their arse sued off with a strong case after this.

The NCAA is not going to be sued for ruling a player ineligible.

They won't be sued for declaring a player ineligible. They will be sued for punishing a school when the player wasn't officially "ineligible".

The NCAA enforces its rules how they see fit. Just because you or I don't agree with how they ruled, doesn't mean someone can sue them over it. If someone did, they have zero ground to stand on.
Also, unless you were in on the conversations between Auburn and the NCAA, I don't think you can determine on what exactly transpired behind the scenes.

Actually the NCAA can be sued. The better TV/media contracts for the schools right now are because UGA and a few other schools sued the NCAA's arse back in the 80s.

The NCAA has been sued more than a few times, and lost. Paul Finebaum regularly talks about how he has testified against them in 2 differnet cases dealing wih the Albert Means Investigation.
