How is this possible:

quote:

Alabama has gone 42 quarters (10-and-a-half games) without being penalized for offensive holding.

I know people will say discipline...and I agree that Bama's O-line looked good last year.

I just find it strange that we get holding calls...even when we don't hold. You'd think they'd at least get one or two of those, like every other team gets questionable calls.

I'm not sure how that's possible.

Then again, isn't the SEC home office in B'Ham?

Just sayin'.

Refs choosing to look the other way.

It is impossible to be any good and not get a holding call over 10.5 games.

As someone mentioned they should have at least gotten a couple of calls to go against them when it wasn't holding.

Some of the biggest bull shite ever IMO.

Holding of any kind, particularly by offensive linemen, is one of the most subjective, judgment call penalties in football. Therefore it is by far the easiest to manipulate to help or hurt a certain team. So, Alabama never gets called for it, LSU gets called for it when we don't do it, and LSU opponents never get called for it. I can't believe anyone would be surprised at this.

I've seen Alabama fans answer this question with, "Look at '95 Nebraska, they weren't called for holding!"

And I actually think they're onto something there. When a team reaches almost mythical status, subjective calls become influenced.

Bama is on a run similar to USC several years back. I'm not doing research, but I bet you could find USC's subjective calls against were less than the norm.

Another factor when talking subjectivity is the familiarity the officials have with the Bama program. Most (2 out of 3) are from the state of Alabama. When Saban hires officials for practices, scrimmages, or any other functions, where do they come from?

I'm not claiming conspiracy. Only pointing out something much stronger than that.

Human nature.

It's the same thing that has influenced penalties and yards in the SEC for decades.

That's a great question. Maybe you should write them and ask. Here is there address.

The refs are keeping a BLIND eye on the Alabama OL. It's the same eye they used in reviewing Peterson's interception last year.

If the offensive line has not held in 10 games they are not doing their jobs correctly...sometimes, when a player gets beat by the defense, you have to hold to protect your QB.

Hearing this makes me want to question the officiating in last year's LSU vs Alabama game. I need to go back and re-watch it and look to see if I notice any questionable calls in favor of Alabama.

A few bad calls could be the difference in the game.

Seriously, someone who has the time needs to watch film of every offensive play of Alabama's for that time span, find every instance of holding because I'm pretty sure there are plenty, and submit them to the SEC office. Would be pretty hard to ignore as a collection of missed calls over that time span.

LSU recent history, holding penalties called on opponents' offense, SEC games:

2009
Arkansas: 2
Ole Miss: 0
Alabama: 0
Auburn: 0
Florida: 0
Georgia: 1
Mississippi State: 1 (declined)
Vanderbilt: 0

2009 season total, in 8 SEC games: 4 (1 declined)

2008
Arkansas: 1
Ole Miss: 0
Alabama: 1
Georgia: 0
South Carolina: 1
Florida: 0
Mississippi State: 1
Auburn: 0

2008 season total, in 8 SEC games: 4

2007
Tennessee: 0
Arkansas: 2
Ole Miss: 0
Alabama: 1
Auburn: 1
Kentucky: 1 (offset by defensive penalty on LSU)
Florida: 0
South Carolina: 0
Mississippi State: 1

2007 season total, in 9 SEC games: 6 (1 offset by defensive penalty on LSU)

So, that's it. 14 holding penalties called on opposing SEC offenses in three years covering 25 games, 2 of which were not enforced due to being declined or offset by penalties against LSU.

Breakdown by teams:

In 3 games
Arkansas: 5
Mississippi State: 3 (1 declined)
Alabama: 2
Auburn: 1
Florida: 0
Ole Miss: 0

In 2 games
Georgia: 1
South Carolina: 1

In 1 game
Kentucky: 1
Tennessee: 0
Vanderbilt: 0

So, more than half (8 of 14) of the holding penalties called on opposing offenses in the last three years were called on Arkansas and Mississippi State. That leaves 6 holding calls on other opponents in 19 games over three years.

They have had some called that the opposition declined, if that alleviates any Catcher In The Rye made me kill conspiracy esque concerns.

I googled the Nebraska 1995 thing, couldnt find anything.

My buddy is a lead researcher and writer for ESPN if everyone is really that interested I can find out...

Be vocal about it. Call into sports talk shows, gameday signs, write, email and call the SEC office, blog about it, and make it known that this is happening. The numbers tell the story.

It's very unfair, yet very blatant.
