Does anyone else think Mack Brown is way overrated as a coach? I saw some Texas fans arguing that Brown outcoached Saban in the BCSNC and justified their assessment solely by pointing to the "fake punt." That was definitely a dumb play, but I'm not entirely sure that wasn't an audible called at the LOS.

But then I started thinking about Brown's job in general as a HC and, the more I think about it, the less I think he's one of today's best coaches.

Consider:

-He is the head coach at the school with the greatest amount of football revenue and is supported by incredibly rich boosters.
-He coaches the flagship program in perhaps the most talent-rich state in the country (if not THE most talent-rich, it is unquestionably in the top 3)
-There is no other powerhouse program in the state

He has had great teams at Texas, but he SHOULD have great teams: in addition to being able to recruit a top 5 class without even trying, he's stolen many of the best assistant coaches in the country by simply spending the aforementioned Texas money.

Does anyone else agree that 1 national title and 2 appearances in 10 (or however many) years is a little underachieving? Hell, Saban's built 2 programs from nothing into NC contenders in the same time frame and still has 2 years of change spent in the NFL.

I guess I just find it funny that Texas fans are still making excuses for their loss when they have basically a Les Miles clone at the helm of their program. I really think Meyer, Saban, Stoops, Tressel, Butch Davis, etc. would have 3+ national titles with all of the advantages that Brown enjoys at UT.

It doesn't hurt that he is in one of the most talent-rich states as far a high school talent goes.

So 10 consecutive years of 10+ wins is now considered overrated?

No. That is a stupid statement. Brown played for a NC this year, and probably would have won if not for Colt's injury. He had saban the great playing scared enough to try a fake punt. He won a BCS game last year, and should have played for the NC but got screwed. Won a BCS game in 04 and NC in 05. Also Colt McCoy is the winning-est qb in college football history. But dont let facts get in your way.

even a monkey could lock down recruiting in the state of texas at UT. that's automatic 10 wins a season right there.

How many appearances do you think Bama will make in a similar time frame?

I've always liked him. The bottom line is that he is the head coach of the highest grossing program in the country. No rational person can argue that he isn't doing something right at UT

I don't know you, and I have no animosity towards you, but this is a f'cking stupid thread.

Mack Brown is a great coach, always has been, and a quality human being.

Okie recruits the hell out of Texas, and are a powerhouse. LSU also is able to pull some top talent out of the Houston are. Just because you're the only powerhouse in the state doesn't mean other powerhouses don't get recruits.

His teams are always elite or close to it. The championship numbers just seem low because he has Oklahoma in the division, a program at the same level as Texas. It's hard to say he's not a great coach looking at the body of work. Plus, let's not forget how well he did at UNC.

When Mack took over UT program...revenue was around 20M...fast forward 10 years later and it is almost 90M. Coach Macovich(sp?) before him ran a complete clusterfrick of the program and alienated boosters and the highschool coaches and alumni in the state.

I think Brown's greatest achievement in building the program to the elite status of today is that has galvonized all of these crucial areas into one well oiled machine. It's easy to say "well, he has all the resources...he should win"...but he made the program what it is today.
