The 1937 Alabama team lost the 1938 Rose Bowl to California 13-0. Alabama finished the season 9-1. California finished 10-0-1. California and Pittsburgh both claim NCs for 1937.

1938 Rose Bowl - L 13-0 California
1972 Orange Bowl - L 38-6 Nebraska
1974 Sugar Bowl - L 24-23 Notre Dame
1975 Orange Bowl - L 13-11 Notre Dame

And, to the Tennessee fan talking about the national championship game not starting until 1998, there was a thing called the Bowl Coalition in 1992 when #1 Miami and #2 Alabama played in the Sugar Bowl. That lasted until 1994 when it was replaced by the Bowl Alliance for the seasons of '95, '96, '97.
