Right after they won the twelfth one? Seems like a good starting point...

I am 45, and Bama didn't start "claiming" 12 NC's until sometime in the 90's. Before they won in 92, the only reference I ever saw was to being 6 time winners. Some of the older Bama fans probably had or remember this shirt, I know I remember it...as a young Auburn fan it pissed me off.

Frankly, I think it was somebody in Bama's Sports Information office who came up with the idea. Frankly, it's genius. It has been told so many times and put on so many t-shirts, bumper stickers and car tags that it has become accepted as fact. Bama has been, and unfortunately seems to be again, a football power house with the right to brag about their legitimate championships. Claiming retroactively given titles, IMHO, cheapens the legitimate ones. Bama fans will make the argument that "that's how they did it back then" or "look at Notre Dame's count" and that's a legitimate point. But the difference is that you don't see ND fans wearing "Got 18?" T-shirts.

This whole argument is germans, and in honor of that, a quote by a German.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." Joseph Goebbels
