Why is it considered bad to criticize Refs?

Really, what's the big deal about criticizing refs? What is so "unethical" about using free speech?
Besides that, the refs don't hold press conferences, so the only ones getting hammered on this are the coaches.
So they talk trash about the refs? This is suppose to downgrade the league? How?
What, are coaches, players and fans supposed to pretend the refs aren't part of the game? Everything about the game is open to criticism, fair or not. And last time I checked, college football is a booming business.

SEC rules say otherwise with regard to schools and coaches, though.

I understand that. But why does the SEC or any league, for that matter, have rules about criticizing refs?

imo punishing sec coaches does nothing to solve the issue. it seems like the sec office is ignoring the problem.

most likely the perception that refs are on the take...other leagues have already suffered a black eye
I don't think coaches should be suspended...They should be fined...They make enough money and if they want to trash a ref that must be willing to pay the price

Now that makes sense. And I ain't talking pinto beans here. Fine them $25,000 to start and work up from that. In the SEC all the coaches got plenty of chump change.
In fact, if the Coach is fined, the fine should go to the charity of choice of the opposing team that coach just played.

You won't dare find the "Penis Cutter," Tim Tebow criticizing the refs! They've been giving him preferential treatment for the entire season. I'm surprised that they didn't retaliate against the kid that drilled Penis Cutter in the Kentucky game.

I think it's because of what we're seeing now: everyone is criticizing ALL officials all of a sudden. Media outlets that never said a damn thing are suddenly posting articles about horrible officiating and how rigged things are.
I've always been one that said it's a joke how bad officiating can be sometimes yet anyone who says anything about it is fined. I think I see why now: people are stupid. Every little call they don't agree with has now become "omg the refs are cheating for the other team!"
Take Kiffin's "it was 8 penalties on us to 1 on them. I wasn't going to let the refs end the game by calling holding" shite. Anyone watching that game thought the officiating was biased for Alabama? I didn't, and I don't remember hearing anyone else cite anything other than the number.

If by fricking up your job, you get in the way of someone else doing theirs to the best of their ability, you deserve to get your arse chewed out by that person imo

It's an effort for the SEC office in AlafrekingBama to keep attention away from the refs so people don't realize how truly one-sided they are in calling games for their beloved Crimson Tide.

It doesn't look professional. There are methods to take care of this behind the scenes and out of the public. The problem is this year some coaches have come out as they were being snowballed by refs and bad calls. Instead of hoping to get something done at the end of the season with better training they've come out hit them hard and force the SEC to do something.
I generally prefer it to be behind doors but there are times when you must stand up for what is right. I felt Petrino had a reason to come out and be critical, the UT call was bad but I didn't notice a string of calls that went against them to help Bama but I must admit I didn't watch much of the game.
