That is not how college athletics are, in 2024, though. And if you aren't playing the same game as everyone else then you are going to be left well behind.
LSU is playing the game along with everyone else. What they are not doing is agreeing to pay a random DT in the spring portal 3x more money than their All-American LT who's projected to be a Top 5 draft pick next year. Once you do that the flood gates open and everyone else on the roster is looking for more money. If they don't get it, they transfer.

I added to my post on edit and it is pretty much exactly what you said.
I think the thing it makes you, as a coach, most focused on is making sure you almost never get in a "we have to grab a premium portal player at this spot or else we can't compete" position. Because there isn't a good answer, there.
