I agree with his view of how he wants college athletics to be.

That is not how college athletics are, in 2024, though. And if you aren't playing the same game as everyone else then you are going to be left well behind.

I think LSU obviously does do NIL, but he is also probably is being honest in saying that LSU isn't going to get in bidding wars, which are pretty easy to spot these days via which teams are in the final 2-3 on guys. LSU just got unlucky that their position of need was one in which guys in the portal seem to be willing and able to get teams into bidding wars. So if you aren't willing to do that, you are going to be up shite creek in terms of acquiring talent via the portal at that position.

I do think that there are differences in how programs approach the portal with NIL money. All of us decide a rate to pay. Some are willing to pay a premium at a position of need. And some are going to overwhelm kids with premium values up front to snatch them up. I don't really think any of them is "wrong" necessarily, but the are different approaches for sure.

LSU is playing the game along with everyone else. What they are not doing is agreeing to pay a random DT in the spring portal 3x more money than their All-American LT who's projected to be a Top 5 draft pick next year. Once you do that the flood gates open and everyone else on the roster is looking for more money. If they don't get it, they transfer.
