Not really
THE Abercrombie was Abercrombie & Fitch which was THE sportsman's store in the US of A. It had 1 location and that was in New York City. Inside their doors you could find all the supplies for a real African Safari and book your porters and such with 1 stop shopping and the service was AWESOME. You could also outfit an ascent of Mount Everest and book your Sherpa's inside their store. For the rank and file grunts like myself they sold the best equipment for say camping at a price that was fair for those with a champagne taste but a swill "bucket" beer wallet. (yes, in my youth you bought cheap beer in a tin bucket).
They closed their doors in the 80's and was replaced by the "Abercrombie" you refer to which has crappy crap and overpriced to boot.
It was a place of wild stories as well. Old man Madden (of Hamburg fame) casually entered their store. Perused their selection of firearms, loaded one, and blew his brains out right in the store during operating hours.

You can still find Abercrombie & Fitch SxS and O/U branded shotguns out there that were usually built by Spanish or Italian gunmakers. You can also find their hunting wear in decent shape, such as bird vests.

I seriously had no clue about any of this.
I do remember those Banana Republics that had a Jeep crashing through the store window.

Abercrombie wanted to continue selling professional gear to professional outdoorsmen.
Fitch wished to expand the company's appeal to the general public.
The pre Regan company ...
Had a shooting range inside the store
Had a rooftop pool (with fly & bait casting instructor)
The gun room had a kennel for dogs
Had a golf school on site
Floors 2 - 5 were based on climates / terrains
Had a watch repair facility
First store in America to import Mahjong
Outfitted Lindbergh for his historic flight
Did "product placement" (now common) in a movie in the 1960's

I’ve always said, small hands are a blessing…they make whatever you’re holding look bigger.
