USC soundly beat Alabama head to head in 1978. In 1974, AP champ Oklahoma was on probation.

That USC team also was manhandled by Arizona.
The AP crowning National Champions is notated as the start of modern college football, and progressed to the BCS and now the CFP. I chose not to award championships in my count for split titles but only the #1 that was considered to be the authority at the time. If you want to award splits or nitpick, then have at it. I gave USC the 2004 title, but that was stripped, I don't see you arguing that one in your counts?!
