Question: is MSU actually capable of poaching a current SEC baseball head coach? My BaseVol buddies do not seem to think so.
Although MSU has heavily invested in its baseball program over the last few decades, it’s hard to imagine that they will offer a more lucrative contract than what these other SEC programs are now willing to pay. I’ll hang up and listen.
What is Andy Cannizaro up to?

Obviously, it's early, and we've got a ways to go... but, our team looks night and day from last year in the best possible ways. We may not be looking for a new coach after this season.
To answer your question... we could steal Butch Thompson from Auburn anytime we want.

Probably not even though MSU has a great BB history. Why would someone like the Bama coach leave after one year? OUtside of the MSU history and the 10K fans they bring, what other positive is there. Bama has proven with NS that you can be successful in other sports at Bama while FB thrives. Plus as Greg said in congress you need a powerful FB team along with mens basketball to fund the non revenue sports. This would apply to other SEC schools as well but I reference Bama since they have a new coach. And long established coaches like Corbin are surely not going to leave.

If O'Sullivan flirted with LSU I could see him wanting that job with the support MSU can give him that Fla doesn't.
Corbin always seems to come up but he seems content to ride it out in Nashville.
I'm not convinced Vitello wouldn't strongly consider it as well although Hog fans seem to think he longs for Fayeteville.

Your Vol friends must not know much about SEC baseball and the capabilities that State has regarding baseball.
If State wanted Vitello he would listen. This isn't football.

Sully gets great support from the admin and is paid well. Florida fans also give baseball great support, just not on a level of the top 4 teams (attendance wise) but very comparable to Carolina and A&M.
2024 SEC Baseball Attendance Figures
School - Capacity - Avg. Home Attendance
LSU - 10,326 - 10,551
State - 15,000 - 10,172
Arkansas - 10,737 - 9,682
Ole Miss - 11,477 - 9,459
Carolina - 8,242 - 6,863
Florida 7,000 - 5,972
Texas A&M - 6,100 5,648
Tennessee - 4,387 - 4,835
Auburn - 4,096 - 3,877
Alabama - 5,867 - 3,602
Vanderbilt - 3,802 - 3,405
Kentucky - 5,000 - 2,190
Georgia - 3,420 - 1,810
Missouri - 3,031 - 1,192
Sully is also paid as much as anyone in the SEC. Nobody knows what Corbin makes, but Sully and JJ both received contract extensions this year and the were nearly the same annual amount.
So could he be poached, yes of course, but I think someone would have to pay way over market. I don't know that Sully is worth it. He is a good coach but not sure how much tread is left on the tires.

Vitello would leave Tennessee in an instant if State offered him

Didn’t Butch Thompson already tell MSU to kick rocks after they let Andy go?

This is where the confusion comes from, what makes them different from Tenn? 1 Covid championship (and a while much larger) a stadium that seats about 12k? Can’t imagine Tenn doesn’t have the funding to catch up with states facilities in about 4-5 years time if it cared to

There's a lot of things that separate State from UT baseball wise. Namely it's the baseball culture and fan support that's existed since the Ron Polk era.
You already answered yourself though. "Can’t imagine Tenn doesn’t have the funding to catch up with states facilities in about 4-5 years time if it cared to"
State does care, and they will put up the money and support that UT has never had in the entire history of their baseball program.

Yes. Not every coach, but there are more than a handful that would listen, and several that would likely take the job.

Yes, but I think a few guys are locked in and not going anywhere in Corbin, Schloss, DVH, O'Sullivan, Johnson, & Vitello.
If they target a Butch Thompson or Rob Vaughn (too early) then I think they could.
I doubt they're interested in Kingston, Bieser, or Mingione, but I think they could steal one if they wanted.
I left Bianco out. He's not going anywhere and I don't think anyone wants him.

MSU targeted Butch Thompson the year before they won it all and he said no.

I don't really recall that, but timing matters. MSU got turned down by Schloss too. But if they went after him the year we did (and we weren't shopping or we landed Tadlock) then I think MS could have happened Schloss.

I personally always enjoyed lsu state baseball. Fun series every time they played. Hope state figures it out.

1.5 million a year base salary
He’s getting the facilities he wants
Capacity going to 7,750 by the start of 2025
He has the full support of the university
He has the full support of the fans
State has a fine history but Tennessee has a better future.

One major part of this is that a good bit of State people request their NIL money to go to baseball and baseball only. Tennessee wipes the floor with State in football and basketball facilities and NIL, but baseball is the opposite. They take more pride in their baseball team and facilities than the other sports. We’ll see how the new AD handles baseball, but with Cohen it was baseball first and everything else after. I know a lot of people that were pissed about that approach, but they’ve got a lot of fans that think this way as well
