What we should do is just pick the 3 based on history and geography with the intention that they be truly permanent.

For example, Bama's 3 should be Auburn, UT, and State;

& how long before the complaints about Auburn being the toughest of the 3 for Alabama?

Don't think the "balance in strength" factor would last but a few hours.

For ex.: Say Aub. has Ala., UGA, & LSU. Is it still the best decision to give Ala. the 3 you listed?

Maybe I'm misreading you, but I think you missed the point. Don't worry about balancing the permanent opponents. Let history and geography dictate that. The balance will take care of itself when you consider that having 3 strong opponents means that your slate of 12 rotating opponents will be relatively weak.

Auburn's three should be Bama, UGA, and Florida because of history. Back when teams made their own schedules, that's who they played. Florida was one of the few schools that would go to Auburn for games, since they were in a similar situation themselves, being considered rather remote and not a big money draw (which motivated a lot of matchups).
